Paul Elliker's bold and colourful paintings, sometimes on a massive scale, address the romantic and utopian notions of the landscape. Making use of second hand source material, such as children's book illustrations, greetings cards, school textbooks and images from the book jackets of pulp romantic fiction, Paul paints reassuring rural idylls which exist only in the minds of city folk. With their perfect composition, execution and unconventional colours, his paintings play with the idea of romantic escape whilst reminding the viewer of their inherent impossibility.
