An exhibition of paintings by John Alvaro Caldas.1934-2006.

We are delighted to announce John Alvaro Caldas's second solo exhibition with Philips; our first one-man show at Thornfield House.

As we continue to photograph and catalogue John's paintings and drawings for the book about his life and work,* I become ever more engrossed in, and intrigued by the man through his art. I spend a lot of time staring into John's pictures and I always find something to impress; the freshness of the paint and the way he handles it with great skill, the colour, line, texture and so on. But to me, the most marvellous and surprising element in his work is his ability to wrestle with many aspects of the 'human condition' without pretention, mannerism or earnestness, all of which can bedevil the artist striving to be taken seriously. Many artists of greater repute have failed in this respect.

This is an opportune moment to take a further look at John Caldas's work and we look forward to meeting visitors, both old and new, at Thornfield House.
